What to Consider When Traveling to Belsh?

While other countries are constantly developing further their ways of transportation, Albania is still trying to build the basic needs of urban infrastructure.

Keep in mind, always, to ask locals for bus stations, travel itineraries, private transport, and other ways to move from one point to another within country.

If you are getting to Albania by air, there are two airports that can connect visitors with the city of Belsh. One is the Tirana Airport, and the other is that of Kukës. Tirana airport is the nearest point to Belsh, while Kukës airport is far from Belsh and conditionally passes through the capital city of Albania, Tirana. From Kukës airport it takes longer to arrive in Belsh.

The best and cheapest way to travel towards Belsh, from Tirana is by bus. Once you have  landed at the airport, get into the bus that takes you to city center and from there find the way to the interurban bus station. The bus station is located near the University of Economics in Tirana. Be aware that most of the buses terminate service before 9 pm.

You can chose to ride a private car, or book a taxi or rent a car. However, these are more expensive comparing to buses.

Tirana to Belsh is about 75.8 km and 1:13 hours away. The road runs on the motorway of Tirana to Elbasan. Once arrived in Elbasan you need to find the bus that goes to Belsh. The kind of vehicles that operate from Elbasan to Belsh are manly minibuses and sprinter buses. Also, taxis are operating on this route. After Elbasan the road passes through Cërrik and finally in Belsh. The travel can be a bit tiring, but it is a beautiful trip that is worth experiencing.

Currency

Albanian currency is Lekë, and we recommend to have with you some cash. However, euro is also used in some parts and businesses. When it comes to travel, lekë is necessary.

Have also a small amount of changes to use them when needed, and be careful with money exchange. Find exchange offices that are licensed and monitored by the government. ATMs are useful too, but they charge a transaction fee.

In Belsh, there is only one exchange shop that provides services, so better be prepared before you get there.
